CWA Safety First
Welcome to the woodcarving workshop. Serious cuts are an inherent result of the use of dull tools, and careless woodcarving if the carver is not attentive. To prevent accidents and make the experience enjoyable for everyone, please take a moment to read the following safety rules before starting:
- Wear a cut resistant glove. The glove is not a cure-all for careless carving techniques as it can easily be penetrated by most carving tools, but it will usually reduce the severity of accidents.
- Use only sharp tools. Dull tools will require more force to remove wood. They will usually do more damage to your hand or leg, if they slip.
- Pay attention to what you are doing while carving. If you begin to feel fatigued, it is time to stop carving.
- Leave your tools at your seat when you move around the room. Tools carried by your side can easily cut an innocent bystander. Cover the cutting edge and tip of tools that are being carried back and forth to the sharpening machine.
- Be aware that the sharpening machine rotates in an upward direction. Place the cutting edge facing upward to avoid possible injury to yourself or an innocent bystander and damage to the machine. Ask for assistance from the instructor if you are unfamiliar with the sharpening system.
Have a very enjoyable and safe carving session.
